An enormous molecule established from repeated subunits (a polymer of acrylic acid) that magically converts a liquid right into a pleasant gel formula.  It always needs to be neutralized with a base (such as sodium hydroxide) for that thickening to occur and it produces viscous, clear gels that also experience great and non-tacky around the skin.
